Suikinkutsu · “the water koto cave”
Suikinkutsu
An underground instrument: an upturned vessel buried in the ground in which falling drops sound like strings.

What it is
A suikinkutsu is a ceramic vessel buried upside down with an opening in the top. Water running off the tsukubai falls inside, and the drops answer in the hollow with a clear ringing. The device is invisible: you hear it but never see it.
It is usually set beside the washing basin so that the sound marks the moment of purification.
How ours is made
The suikinkutsu is a separate three-day block of the September 2026 workshop: alongside it the participants build a traditional bamboo fence and lay out a small Japanese garden. The bamboo work is led by Vladimir Einarov.
