A garden in a bowl: framing the stage

Instead of a dull grey surround in front of the stage — a garden-universe to Irina Andrianova's plan.

“Work is going on apace in the park! We are preparing a modern performance area, and framing the stage is turning into a truly meditative project.”

“The floor of the garden will be paved in the manner of the great Shigemori — different textures standing for the 8 seas. The stones and compositions are mountains. Eight ordinary ones and one principal: Sumeru, the centre of the world and the source of life.”

“In Japanese culture it is not the custom to look a person in the eye while listening to them. That is why an ikebana is often placed on the table, so the gaze has somewhere to go while respect and calm are preserved. We have carried that tradition into the park.”

“When poetry is read on the stage, or someone sings, or music plays, you will be able to look not into empty space but at the Garden-Universe, and think your own thoughts.”
