The Beginning garden: a universe in front of the stage

Over one weekend we made a sheet of water, a stone composition and sketched out the structure of the future stage.

“The masterclass on making a garden in a bowl to frame the stage went by in one breath! Under the guidance of Irina Andrianova and Andrey Darusenkov, the students of the Japanese Garden course built a real corner of harmony with their own hands: a sheet of water, an exquisite composition of stones and plants, and the outline of the future stage.”

At the centre of the composition stands Mount Sumeru, the principal stone (shugeki): the axis of the world, the bridge between heaven and earth, the source of life. Around it are the nine mountains of boulders and changes of level, and between them the eight seas, shown as spiralling lines of paving in different textures in the manner of Mirei Shigemori.

Ishizuta stone posts “leap away” from Sumeru — the splashes, the drops from which planets form. The three islands are the worlds where life already exists: the world of people, the world of gods and the enlightened, the world of nature and spirits.

“When we connect the water, Mount Sumeru will truly become the source of life. The water will run along the sea-channels, fill the spaces between the mountains, and the garden will come alive in the full sense of the word.”
